## **How to make the most of your existing warehouse storage space**

Running out of warehouse space does not always mean you need to invest in a larger building. By reviewing your layout, making better use of vertical space and using the right technology and material handling equipment, you can often increase storage capacity and improve space utilisation within your existing operation.

Here are some of the ways you can make better use of your existing warehouse space.

### **1. Review your current warehouse layout**

The first step is understanding how effectively your existing space is being used.

Warehouse layouts can become less efficient as stock levels, product ranges and operational requirements change. Over time, this can leave unused areas, unnecessarily wide aisles or storage locations that no longer suit the flow of goods.

Review how goods, forklifts and pedestrians move through the operation and identify areas where space is underutilised. Reconfiguring racking or changing the way certain areas are used could create additional storage capacity without increasing your warehouse footprint.

### **2. Make better use of vertical space**

If floor space is limited, there may be opportunities to increase storage capacity by looking upwards.

Using the [right racking solution](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/solutions/racking-solutions/) can help make better use of both vertical and floor space. Different systems suit different requirements, for example, conventional pallet racking provides easy access to individual pallets, while solutions such as drive-in, mobile or shuttle racking can provide higher-density storage by reducing the amount of space dedicated to aisles. The right choice will depend on factors such as the type and volume of goods stored, stock rotation, required throughput and warehouse layout.

Increasing racking height can also create additional pallet locations within the same footprint. This can help reduce the total cost per pallet, as existing costs are spread across greater storage capacity without the need to expand or relocate.

However, the material handling equipment used needs to be capable of accessing these locations safely and efficiently. [Reach trucks](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/our-products/reach-trucks/), for example, are designed to operate in warehouse aisles and lift loads up to 13 metres, helping businesses take advantage of available vertical storage space.

### **3. Choose equipment that helps optimise aisle space**

The type of material handling equipment you use can directly affect how much space needs to be dedicated to aisles.

Trucks and equipment designed for narrow aisle operations can work within smaller spaces, potentially allowing racking to be positioned closer together and creating more room for storage.

[Reach trucks](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/our-products/reach-trucks/) and [very narrow aisle trucks](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/our-products/vna/) can support higher-density warehouse layouts where appropriate. VNA trucks are especially designed to handle loads in very narrow aisles, with configurations that allow pallets to be accessed without requiring the same turning space as a conventional forklift. This allows racking to be positioned closer together, increasing storage density.

When reviewing your warehouse layout, considering racking and material handling equipment together can help achieve the right balance between storage capacity and efficient movement.

### **4. Consider introducing warehouse automation**

[Automation](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/automated-solutions/) can help businesses make better use of existing warehouse space by enabling storage and material movements to be planned around consistent, predictable processes.

[Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/automated-solutions/) can support efficient material flow, while automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) can help maximise storage density by making better use of available vertical and floor space.

[Shuttle systems](https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/automated-solutions/semi-automated-shuttles/) can be particularly effective for increasing storage capacity within an existing footprint. By using deep-lane, high-density racking, Radioshuttles can reduce the need for conventional aisles and allow more pallets to be stored within the same area.

Combined with automation such as AGVs and high-density racking, shuttle solutions can help businesses increase storage capacity without necessarily expanding their warehouse footprint. This can be particularly valuable where space is limited, storage requirements are growing or businesses need to increase capacity while maintaining efficient material flow.

### **5. Use data to understand how space is being used**

Before changing a warehouse layout, it helps to understand what is actually happening across the operation.

A Real-Time Location System (RTLS) can provide greater visibility of where forklifts and other assets are moving within a facility. This can help identify frequently used routes, congestion points and areas that may be underutilised.

Instead of relying solely on assumptions about how a warehouse is being used, businesses can use real operational data to identify opportunities for improvement.

## **Get more from your existing warehouse space**

Maximising warehouse storage space is about more than adding extra racking. Layout, storage height, aisle widths, material handling equipment, automation and data can all influence how effectively the available space is used.

By looking at operations as a whole, businesses can identify opportunities to increase storage capacity and improve material flow without immediately turning to costly expansion or relocation.

We can help you assess your existing operation and identify the right solutions that can help you make better use of the space available. <https://toyota-forklifts.co.uk/solutions/racking-solutions/>
