Looking after material handling equipment for smoother operations

3 minutes to read

To keep operations running smoothly it is important to keep all material handling equipment well maintained. Poorly maintained equipment could lead to unnecessary downtime, increased risk of accidents, as well as an increase in unexpected maintenance costs. To prevent these issues, there are a few steps that can be taken to get the most out of material handling equipment and keep business operations running smoothly.

Regular inspections

One way to prevent unexpected breakdowns is ensuring regular inspections are carried out on all forklift trucks on site. Inspections such as LOLER & PUWER are mandatory, ensuring that equipment is safe and suitable for its intended use.

LOLER & PUWER inspections are required by law at a minimum of once every 12 months and should be conducted by a CFTS accredited company to ensure that the full inspection covers both lifting & driving mechanisms of trucks.

Updating dated equipment

Regularly replacing old, outdated equipment is also an effective means of keeping operations running smoothly. Newer equipment is much less likely to break down and helps with staying compliant as regulations change.

Buying new equipment also brings the added benefit of accessing trucks that have the latest features and technology, leading to overall improvements to your operations.

Training operators

Ensuring all forklift operators are fully trained is a legal requirement. Training is also an excellent preventative measure that reduces the risk of accidents, leading to an overall safer environment. This also ensures a more efficient operation and reduced damage costs.

Fleet management systems

Implementing a fleet management system like Toyota I_Site provides valuable information relating to the status of your trucks. Through key utilisation data and features such as shock management, you will be alerted to any issues with the trucks as and when they appear rather than during maintenance, allowing for smaller, quicker repairs, before damage gets more costly.
