Looking after your forklift tyres during winter

2 minutes to read

The winter months provide a number of challenges for forklift fleet operators and taking precautionary measures for poor weather conditions is essential to safeguard employees and reduce potential accidents.

This blog will provide advice on key areas to consider relating to forklift handling and forklift tyres during the winter months.

Which forklift tyres are best for winter?

It is commonly agreed that the best type of forklift tyres for winter conditions are solid pneumatic, or air-filled pneumatic ones.

Solid pneumatic tyres

These types of tyres are rigid and are less likely succumb to any punctures from loose debris around your workplace.

Air-filled pneumatic tyres

Air-filled pneumatic tyres offer large treads to easily handle loose snow, making them also suitable for wintery conditions, depending on the weather conditions you experience.

Check all air-filled pneumatic tyres are at the correct air pressure and assess the tread to ensure they can safely handle poor operating conditions.

Tools to improve forklift tyre traction

There are two types of precautionary tools you can use to improve tyre traction and reduce the potential for accidents during the winter months:

Forklift tyre chains

Tyre chains encompass the whole tyre, regardless of tyre type. Chains allow the forklift to gain traction on slippery surfaces. The only disadvantage of using chains is that when driven on dry or flat surfaces they can be damaging to both the chains and the surface on which it is operating.

Forklift tyre studs

Tyre studs are spikes that can be drilled into a solid pneumatic tyre without damaging it. The studs allow for better grip when driving in cold and icy conditions.

Preparing your working area

Always ensure that forklift operating areas are free from ice.

Spreading salt will reduce hazardous situations by preventing surfaces from freezing, improving traction and reducing operator glare.

Have a plan in place

Ensure your team are up to date with cold weather driving procedures and general forklift safety knowledge well in advance.

It’s also advisable to set in place a winter plan and educate your team on certain procedures to ensure that everything runs smoothly, efficiently and safely during the winter season.
